Antiquing consists of a series of processes used to simulate the effects of wear and prolonged use. The artist creates the allusion of years of polishing and accidental nicks and dents.

The finished piece should be soft and satiny to the touch with the colors faded and softened. In general, a warm umber glaze is applied over a lighter base coat and allowed to remain in the hollows and curves of the piece while being more rubbed of on the raised areas that correspond to years of handling.
